For Greek surfers, West Crete is a true surf hotspot in the Mediterranean. For visiting surfers, it often comes as a big surprise.
Exposed to the open Mediterranean Sea, West Crete receives swell from multiple directions and offers some of the most consistent and varied surf conditions on the island.
Our two surf locations allow us to work with different swell directions throughout the season.
West swells bring us to Falassarna Beach, while north swells take us to Kalamaki Beach, just outside Chania.

With its long sandy beach, open horizon and turquoise water, Falassarna delivers one of the most unique surfing experiences in Greece.
When Mediterranean swells arrive, the beach transforms into a beautiful playground where long rides, clean peaks and endless space come together.
Multiple peaks can break simultaneously across the beach, creating different wave shapes and levels of power. Beginners can enjoy softer sections in a safe sandy environment, while more experienced surfers can search for cleaner peaks and more playful pockets.
With so much space and variety, every surfer can find their own line.

Friendly Waves, Endless Sessions
Kalamaki is a protected sandy bay that offers friendly and approachable surf conditions throughout much of the year.
On smaller swell days, gentle waves break over the sandy shallows, creating an ideal environment for learning and building confidence.
As the swell grows, the shape of the bay helps organize the incoming energy, producing long and enjoyable rides while maintaining a friendly character.
More experienced surfers can position themselves in the more exposed sections of the beach, while beginners can stay closer to the corners of the bay where the waves remain softer and more forgiving.
This natural variety allows surfers of different levels to enjoy the same session, each finding their own pace and challenge in the water.
A Perfect Environment for Progression
Both Falassarna and Kalamaki are sandy beach breaks with large shallow-water areas, creating a friendly environment for learning and progression.
Compared to powerful open-ocean surf destinations, Mediterranean swells are often more approachable and less intimidating, allowing surfers to focus on technique, timing and wave understanding rather than simply dealing with power and turbulence.
The combination of sandy bottoms, shallow sections and uncrowded lineups helps beginners and progressing surfers build confidence, improve their skills and enjoy more waves throughout every session.

We Follow the Waves
One of the advantages of having two locations is the ability to adapt to the conditions. Rather than waiting for the waves to come to us, we follow the swell where it works best.
West swell or north swell, Falassarna or Kalamaki, we simply go where the waves are.

Falasarna is an epic windsurf spots. The water and beach are so beautiful. Only concern is the off-shore wind. The equipment for rental is great, with a good selection of board sizes and sails. There are harnesses, helmets and safety

Fab beach. Really beautiful as you approach, the view is breath taking. Bit windy when we visited so I would recommend checking the wind direction and speed before you go. Large number of umbrellas and plenty of tavernas in the area. Great.
